CURRENT ASPECTS OF THE INSURANCE MARKET DEVELOPMENT IN UKRAINE
Abstract
The article examines the relevant aspects of the functioning and development of the insurance market of Ukraine in the context of the rapid introduction of digital technologies. It is noted that although domestic insurance companies are modernizing their processes by introducing innovations, the level of digitalization is significantly lower than in developed Western countries. An analytical review of quantitative and qualitative changes in the insurance services market during 2021 – nine months of 2024 is presented. It is established that the total number of insurance companies during this period decreased by 51.61%, in particular, the largest decrease was among companies providing risk insurance. The author reveals a tendency to reduce the number of insurance contracts concluded, which in 2024 decreased by almost 36.7 million units compared to 2021. The author analyzes the dynamics of gross insurance premiums and payments, which show a decrease of more than 7% and 6%, respectively, indicating a slowdown in the market development. The structure of insurance premiums and payments by types of insurance companies (“Life” / “non-Life”), categories of insurers, sales channels and types of contracts is presented. It was found that the largest share of premiums is provided by individuals, while the agent network is the main channel for selling insurance products. The most profitable types of insurance are hull insurance, MTPL, Green Card, and property insurance. At the same time, the volume of insurance payments is also concentrated in these areas, which indicates their significant role in the overall structure of insurance companies. The author analyzes the impact of regulatory changes, in particular Regulation No. 850, on the reduction in the number of companies due to tighter requirements for capital, solvency, liquidity and asset quality. As a result, the author concludes that the negative dynamics of the Ukrainian insurance market development is due to both internal economic difficulties and the impact of external challenges, in particular, war, emigration, and a reduction in business activity. The article emphasizes the need for the industry to adapt to new conditions, digital transformation and implementation of sustainable development strategies to maintain market positions and protect the interests of policyholders.
